Upon the Roof I Sat

I’m sitting on the roof

watching the inmates play.

There must have been a goof.

I’m catching out all day.

This is an easy job

I know it’s hard to tell.

I had to tell ol’ Bob

that he can go to hell.

He wanted me to trade

My position for his.

I had to pull a blade

To keep a job like this.

I’m sitting on the roof

And now I’m very bored.

There must have been a goof

‘Cause I haven’t even snored.

There’s nothing worth my while

Except maybe these rocks.

There’s a good projectile-

Inmates running in flocks.

I hit one on the head.

He’s fallen to the ground.

I hope he is not dead.

His body shan’t be found.

An inmate said my name.

I cannot let him tell.

I must kill, wound or maim

All the others as well.

They’re in such a panic.

They have such a strong will.

I’m getting quite frantic.

Why won’t they just stand still?

I wish they would not run.

It makes them hard to hit.

I’ll have to use the gun.

It will not hurt a bit.

From the gun came a sound

That flashed like a bird’s wing.

Another fell to the ground-

I did not feel a thing.

I knew it would not hurt.

I knew it for a fact.

I shot a guy named Burt.

I got him in the back.

He’s fallen to his grave.

There’s no more mister Burt.

It’s my job I must save

Or I could lose my shirt.

Who’s next- Who will it be?

There’s one standing still.

I shot him happily-

It was an easy kill.

I shot one who was running

As fast as he could go.

I then started dancing

As I yelled out, “Too Slow!”

I checked my supply bag

And was surprised as hell.

It almost made me gag-

I had used my last shell.

I didn’t know what to do.

Scared to death I threw my gun.

I knew that my job was through,

And that my career was done.

From the roof I would leap.

My plan was simple as that.

Turns out- I was asleep-

And upon the roof I sat.
