That means that it is subject to change depending upon how the course develops...so check it often.

Tuesday, 24 August— Introduction to course, pass out syllabus, ask each student to identify himself and state one interesting thing about his life—Diagnostic essay J1 "What is the most interesting thing I have ever done and why?"

Assignment: Read Chapter One 1-5.  Pay special attention to the paragraph about Anne Frank.  Read and write a response to J2-"Narration."

Thursday, 26 August— Divide into groups and discuss J2. Discuss journal writing and narration, including differences between narrative essays and fiction--between colloquial and standard English.  Write a paragraph about Anne Frank in class. Collect. Read Chapter One 6-9. Clustering. One paragraph in class. Collect. Supplemental information in Chapter 17—261-276.

                Assignment: Read Chapter One 11-13. Free write for about a page answering one of the three questions in activity                      5. Read Chapter 15—229-231. Do exercises.   Finally, do exercise 11 on page 270--write a short narrative of about                       a page.

                Tuesday, 31 August—Divide into groups depending on which of the three questions were answered. Discuss in small groups                   and then share with the whole class. Collect. Discuss short narrative.  Collect.   Discuss Chapter 15. Introduce Chapter                   Two—Subjects and Verbs. Give them Diagnostic Test from Test Book. Read Chapter Two—17-21. Do ex. 1-4. Discuss.

Assignment: Read Chapter Two—22-25. Chapter 13—193-195. Do the exercises. Do J3—"Example/Illustration"

                Thursday, 2 September—Divide into small groups and discuss J3. Supplemental information in Chapter 18—277-300. Collect.                   Go over exercises.

Tuesday, 14 September—Give them unit test from Test Book. Do the Crossword Puzzle in Class. Introduce diagramming sheets. Diagram the first block in class. Give them diagnostic test for Chapter Three. Read Chapter Three—Subject/Verb Agreement—39-42 in class.

Assignment: Review Chapters 15, 16, & 23—Moving from the Paragraph to the essay. Study for Grammar Portion of final.

Thursday, 9 December—Grammar Test. Discuss any questions on Chapters 15, 16 or 23 for written essay final. Due: J15 "What grade I should receive in this class and why. What was the most beneficial aspect of this course? the least beneficial aspect?"

Final Examination: Written portion.
