Subjects and Predicates
When trying to find the subject of an active sentence, you should remember that it is the thing that is doing the action. The complete predicate comprises the action (i.e. the verb, or action word) and the thing that is being acted upon. In the diagram, both parts are placed on a horizontal line called the base line.
In these following five diagrams, all you need to identify is the simple subject and the simple predicate, which means the noun that is doing the action and the action that is being done. These two parts are separated by a vertical line that cuts right through the base line.
